Advice to a Gen Z Job Seeker

We recently met with a college marketing student who was visiting New York City branding agencies. She came in for an informational meeting/coffee to get to know BrandTuitive.

Right before she left she asked if we had any suggestions for marketing job seekers like her. We offered the following nuggets of advice – the things we wish we had done better when we were graduating from college:

The simple truth is that core values are very important in determining how people view what you bring to market. Strong core values provide a filter through which you can run your business, develop your advertising and marketing, support your vision and shape the organization’s culture.

Stop saying like, like every 2 seconds

Don’t kid yourself, you’ve at least once crossed over to the dark side and used the word “like” in a sentence where it, like, doesn’t belong. When discussing your brand, be aware of how often you use filler words such as like. Instead of cringing and promising to yourself you will never do it again, try breaking the bad habit.

The Power of Emotion

Effective marketing provokes emotions that fulfill on a customer’s need or desire . . . and ultimately results in their making a purchase. Although the emotions can range from a lighthearted feeling of joy to a deeply rooted feeling of freedom, emotions drive purchasing decisions. Smart marketers understand this and leverage it in their communications.

Marketing that catches the eye, yet friendly to Mother Earth

The new season of Devious Maids started this week and in anticipation of the season premier, the show has gone beyond conventional billboards and posters. They have engaged the core audience by power washing the show logo with the hashtag #secrets on the streets of New York City. This raises awareness for the show, brings attention to the start of the new season and drives engagement via social media.
